Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
From the Old Testament, we hear of Abraham's servant traveling to Abraham's homeland to find a wife for Isaac, Abraham's son. The servant prays to God for guidance and success, both which are fulfilled. Rebekah is found at the well, and agrees to go with the servant and marries Isaac. Psalm 45 is a love song written for a royal wedding. In the verses heard this morning, the bride (the new queen) is asked to transfer her loyalty from her ancestral home to her husband. From the Gospel of Matthew Jesus is found defending himself from the crowd's misunderstanding or reluctance to embrace John and Baptist and Jesus' message of the kingdom of God. The passage ends with Jesus' invitation to those who are seeking a path to the kingdom and God.

Fourth Sunday after Pentecost
We continue with our online offering of Morning Prayer. The first reading, Genesis 22:1-14, is the well known, but troubling, story of the binding and near sacrifice of Isaac. Psalm 13 is a prayer for help, beginning in lament and ending in joy. Matthew 10:40-42 finds Jesus giving final instructions to the disciple with an emphasis on welcome and hospitality, as they set forth in mission.

Third Sunday after Pentecost
We continue with our online offering of Morning Prayer this morning at 10:00 a.m. It is said that Morning Prayer is a time in which we offer ourselves to God, through prayer, listening, and reflection. Over the next four weeks the Old Testament readings come from the Book of Genesis. This morning we hear of God's protection and blessing of Hagar and Ishmael when all seems hopeless. Psalm 86 is a prayer help in a moment of anguish, perhaps reflecting the thoughts of Hagar. Our reading from Matthew includes a number of sayings from Jesus to the disciples, telling them there may be a great cost in following him, but with an even greater reward.

Second Sunday after Pentecost
We continue to offer our pre-recorded online serving of Morning Prayer. Our readings (this morning, or for Sunday) are: Genesis 18:1-15, 21:1-7. Here Abraham extends hospitality to three strangers, who inform he and his wife Sarah that the promise of children will be fulfilled. We hear of the birth of their son, Isaac. Psalm 116: 1, 10-17. Verse 1 is a statement of gratitude for God for God's help. The following verses express ways to respond with gratitude toward God. Matthew 9:35- 10:23 Jesus begins the transfer of his ministry of compassion, healing, preaching and teaching to his disciples.

Online Concert Series: 150 Years of Louis Vierne, Part 1
On June 2nd, 1937, French organist and composer Louis Vierne died on the organ bench while playing a concert at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. This year on June 5th, our organist, Raymond Hawkins, will tempt fate by playing a program that features the works of Louis Vierne and his contemporaries, including the very last piece of music Vierne ever played. This concert is given in part to support the Greater Boston Food Bank and their efforts to assist our neighbors who are struggling to afford food during this uncertain time.

Pentecost Sunday
The Day of Pentecost, coming fifty days after Jesus' resurrection, celebrates the infusion of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles and the church. Two different means by which the Spirit is imparted is shown in the readings. In the Book of Acts, the disciples are gathered in Jerusalem as directed by Jesus for the promised gift of the Holy Spirit. It comes to them in a great rush of wind and "as of tongues of fires." Dramatic and public! In the Gospel of John, it is much more intimate. The risen Christ comforts the apostles in their grief and fear, and breathes on them. "Receive the Holy Spirit," he says. "As the Father has sent me, so I send you." Both empower the disciples, and the church, to carry forth Christ's mission to the world.

The Seventh Sunday of Easter – Ascension Sunday
This Sunday, the 7th Sunday of Easter, we continue with our online offering of Morning Prayer. A general theme in our readings is Jesus's handing over his ministry to those who follow him. Psalm 68 praises God who sees us through trying times. Acts 1:6-14 tells of the Apostles witnessing Jesus' ascension and hearing his promise of the Holy Spirit. After seeing his ascension they return to Jerusalem, devoting themselves in prayer with other women and men. In John 17:1-11, Jesus prays for the protection and well-being of his disciples to continue with his and their mission in anticipation of his departure from them.
