The Fifth Sunday of Easter

Join us this morning at 10 a.m. for the Fifth Sunday of Easter Service

This morning we offer a service of Morning Prayer. It has been said that Morning Prayer is a time in which we offer ourselves to God, and God to us.There is no Communion of bread and wine in this Sunday’s liturgy. Yet the liturgy invites each into a joyous lifting and giving of spirit for union with God, Christ, and each other. For the readings for the Fifth Sunday of Easter we have: Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16: a prayer for deliverance in a time of stress; 1 Peter 2:2-20, with Peter quoting different pieces of scripture encouraging making Christ the foundation and cornerstone of one’s life, including Psalm 118:22: “The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner.”; and John 14:1-14, the beginning of Jesus’ farewell discourse to his disciples prior to his passion, encouraging them to follow his Way, beginning with his familiar words, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.”

Many parishioners will be familiar with Morning Prayer as a result of growing up using the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. Until the mid – late 1970’s, Morning Prayer was the primary Sunday service with Holy Communion celebrated once a month.  The advent of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer (the one we currently use) established Holy Communion as the primary service on Sundays.
