Meet Ashley Bowen, Marbleheader

  • St. Michael's Episcopal Church 26 Pleasant Street Marblehead, MA, 01945 United States (map)

Join historian Donald Friary in St. Michael's Churchyard and in the 1714 church for his portrayal of Ashley Bowen (1728–1813), Marblehead mariner and ship’s rigger. He’ll reminisce about his long life on land and at sea, recalling especially the years of the American Revolution, when he was torn between his admiration for the British Navy, his service in the British siege of Quebec in 1759, his membership in the Church of England, and his identification as a Marbleheader and an American.

Ashley Bowen wrote an illustrated journal for over 40 years recording his experiences and opinions before, during, and after the Revolution and revealing his ambivalent British–American identity.
